I have wanted to do a rainbow button art project for THE longest time. I just couldn’t figure out what I wanted to make with it. Then I finally figured it out… some typography!
I decided to make a sign that I can hang with photos of some of our family travels. And what word coincides perfectly with travel AND sounds all whimsical and fun? Wanderlust, of course!! Let me show you how I made this Wanderlust Rainbow Button Art.
It all started with this fun rainbow button set I found at Joann’s.
I found a fun scripty font on my computer and spelled out my word. I printed out the sheet and practiced spelling it out with the buttons and arranging the colors in rainbow fashion.
To figure out how much color to use I did the following math:
(10 letters in “wanderlust”) divided by (6 buttons colors) = 1.6 letters per color
Now to figure out how to mount the word.
I still had quite a bit of a large Styrofoam sheet leftover from my Haunted House Cloche project. It seemed perfect for mounting this oversized text! And it would be really lightweight to hang on the wall.
I measured how large my text was and cut the foam down to the right size.
I wrapped the foam with some remnant fabric to create a background for my word. This cloud flannel print was just perfect for my travel-themed artwork!
I hot glued the short ends of the fabric to the back of the foam, then the center of the long ends of fabric.
Fold the corners like you would a gift-wrapped package to create a neat corner then hot glue in place.
The trick is not to stretch the fabric as you go, just keep it taught.
Once the foam was covered I moved the buttons onto the new surface and spelled out the word again prior to gluing it all down. Once I was satisfied everything was where I wanted it to be I glued the buttons down with Zip Dry wet adhesive (affiliate link).
I can’t wait to gather up some prints of our travels and create a new gallery wall! It will be so fun for our family to look at the memories we’ve made together and plan future trips to places we want to visit.
