Farmhouse Door Makeover

Painting a door black is a great way to achieve that farmhouse look!

And don’t miss the sneak peek at the end of the post of my NEW dining room!

Painting a door black is a great way to achieve that farmhouse look!
Back in January we started a MAJOR renovation of our house. We did a complete overhaul of our eat-in kitchen (I’m talking gutting it completely and starting from scratch), added on to it by about 9 feet, and added on a dining room. It was both exciting and utterly exhausting! As a work at home mom, working IN a construction site pretty much went how you think it might. Add to that my husband started a project at work that had him out of town more than he was home. Blech!!

But back in May all of the construction and installations were complete! Yay! Since then I’ve been tasked with getting everything back in it’s proper place and giving it a lived in and homey look.

There’s not much to decorate in the kitchen with cabinets everywhere so I’ve been focusing most of my energy on the dining room. I’m giving it a farmhouse look so it’s a nice and cozy space to hang out in. The main color scheme is black and white. All of the walls are white, but my builder grade door that leads to the patio was getting lost in the space.

With all of the white walls, the white door went completely unnoticed in the room. Not that you want to draw attention to a door necessarily, but there are ways to make it look a LOT better than it did.

Enter Americana Decor Curb Appeal Paint in Colonial Black! Black was the perfect color to make my builder grade door pop.

I got to work taping off the doorknob, lock, and windows. Two coats later…

What a difference a little paint makes! Isn’t that plain white door just so boring? Now it pops right off the wall! And it gives the perfect farmhouse vibe I was going for in the room.

The outside of the door was pretty dull, too. And that molding? It was desperate for a coat of protective paint. Time to start taping things off again!

Two coats of paint later and you can barely recognize it as the same door! It makes my heart so happy.

We painted the outdoor light fixture black, which was the original one we had on the house, just in a new space now. You can see how to do that here.

We also added a black aluminum awning above the door both for aesthetic appeal and to help keep us or pets dry when entering during the rain.

And flowers, of course. Lots and lots of flowers.

And THIS, my friends, is a little sneak peek at my farmhouse dining room! That gray barnwood shiplap wall is all sorts of amazing! Especially as a backdrop for my black dining room hutch. You can also glympse our farmhouse-style table in the space.

Hopefully it won’t be too much longer until the full reveal! I only have a couple of more projects left to complete but the hubby is helping and he’s still not in town much. Fingers crossed we get them done soon!

Looks great! You are the 2nd person that has used this paint. Could you tell me what the sheen is of the paint? I painted my front door a few years ago and the paint was gloss, which shows every ding and dent. My door is in need of a new coat of paint and I know I do not want the gloss paint again.

It's not matte, but it's also not super glossy. Kind of in between. This is a brand new door so I can't advise on dings, but we have a puppy who jumps on it occasionally and the paint is holding up great. Dirt and mud wipe off easily.
