How to Store a Wide-Brim Hat

how to store a wide brim hat
Do you ever have a stroke of brilliance and wonder why you just couldn’t have had that wonderful thought sooner? I have lived in my house for over 10 years. As I’ve lived here I have garnered a small hat collection.  And these hats… well, let’s just say they aren’t the easiest to store. We’re not talking baseball caps, folks. I’m talking cute sun hats and fun felt winter hats.
Flat surfaces would be the perfect place for these hats to live, but those can be hard to come by, especially in out of the way spaces. I recently brain stormed for ideas to store these hats (otherwise I was sure I was just going to have to let them go!) and stood in my closet as a I did so. And I came up with the perfect storage idea! All I had to do was look up…

hanging hats in closet
We have a lot of unused space in our walk-in master closet. You wouldn’t think so peeking in the door, but if you go in, turn around, and look up… There is so much space! But how to use it? I thought about putting up a shelf for the hats, but that would take time.
Instead I came up with a method to hang the hats that took less that 10 minutes to put together.
washi tape clothespin
Hang the hats vertically with clothespins!
To dress up the clothespins a bit I covered one side with decorative faux bois washi tape. On the back, I used the Velcro Picture Frame Command Strips. The clothespins are thin enough that you can cut the Commend strips in half, doubling the amount that can be used.

Apply the clothespins with the Command Strips to the walls. The reasoning for using the Velcro Strips is that, since the Velcro is so grippy (that’s a word, right?), that the clothespin can be tilted if needed so that only the top part of the Velcro is connected allowing the brim of the hat not to be bent as it’s held by the clothespin.
10 minutes and just a few dollars spent – not bad!

That's a great idea/ solution to hat storage issue! One question though: how do you access/reach them when you'd like to wear one if they're clipped above a doorway? I'd like to try the Velcro & clothespin idea to store hats for my mom & she also has available space over her closet doorway. But she's in her late 70's so they have to be easily accessible w/o a step ladder. Do you have a trick for this?

I usually stand on my vanity stool to access them. If the wall behind her closet door or somewhere else easily accessible is open then you could hang the hats there.
