Harvest Orbs

Fall is in the air! The leaves have been falling here for over a month, more due to the midsummer heat wave than the approach of cooler temperatures, but it does help one get in the mood for autumn!

I recently found some great finished fall decor and fall craft supplies to create my own custom decor at Old Time Pottery. Today I am showing you how to easily make two different decorative harvest orbs, and how to display them with ready-made fall decor.

2-pack 4″ Styrofoam balls

Let’s begin with the fall leaves orb.

Take 5 strands of raffia and wrap them around one of the Styrofoam balls, hot gluing as you go. Tie a knot in the raffia once you’ve wrapped it completely around the ball.

Cut the leaves from the bush leaving none of the stem attached. Begin hot gluing the leaves to the Styrofoam, starting from the bottom and working your way to the top. Only put hot glue on the bottom quarter of the leaf so that the top of the leaf is loose – this will help add texture and dimension.

Once you have glued the leaves on all around the Styrofoam, tie the raffia into a bow to complete the look.

Next up, the hanging pom pom mum orb.

This time, take 5 strands of raffia and hot glue the ends to the bottom of the Styrofoam ball. Wrap the raffia around to the top of the ball, gluing as you go. Make a knot at the top of the ball. The raffia now forms a loop for hanging.

Use the two pom pom mum bushes and the berry spray to cover the ball. Use the wire cutter to cut the mums and pom poms off of the bush 1-2″ down the stem. Leave the leaves on the pom poms. Variously place the flowers into the Styrofoam. If they feel loose like they will fall out of the ball, add a little hot glue to the underside of the flower and press firmly into the ball. Pull the berries off of the spray. Fill in the gaps on the orb by hot gluing berries to the ball.

I stuck a thumb tack in the back of the open frame to hang the pom pom mum orb. The fall leaves orb is a great accent sitting next to a pumpkin or other fall decoration.
