Keep warm this fall and look stylish with this plaid blanket scarf that can be made in just 15 minutes with 1 yard of flannel.
Not only are all things tartan and plaid trendy right now, but so are blanket scarves!
So why not combine the two to help you stay warm this winter?
You can sew up this Glam Plaid Blanket Scarf in just 15 minutes.
And it’s an easy DIY for sewing beginners.
Plaid Blanket Scarf: Fabric
I am a chronic fabric remnant shopper (and hoarder!).
I recently came across a this lovely red plaid flannel in the remnants at Joann’s and had to have it!
An entire yard for $2.50!
Since remnant sizes do tend to vary I did double check the size.
It was indeed 44″ x 36″.
A yard is all you need to create this blanket scarf.
Cut one yard of fabric into two 18″ x 36″ strips.
Plaid Blanket Scarf: Sewing
Lay the two strips of fabric on top of one another with the “right sides” facing each another.
(Since this is flannel, there are not really a right and wrong side.)
Stitch together one of the short ends with a 1/4″ seam.
This is simply to attach the two strips of fabric together to make a long piece of fabric.
Iron and stitch a 1/4″ hem along the long ends of the scarf.
(This is my favorite tip for ironing a quick and even hem!)
Plaid Blanket Scarf: Fringe
Gently pull out ~10-15 horizontal threads from each end of the scarf to create a fringe along the edges.
Plaid Blanket Scarf: Bling
Add a few vintage-looking buttons and the blanket scarf will be complete!
Drape the scarf around your shoulders to decide where best to place the buttons along one edge of the fabric.
There are so many fun ways the scarf can be worn!
Drape it like a shawl, wrap it like a scarf, and even wear it as the ever popular infinity scarf.
However it is worn, it is sure to be warm and snugly.
And plaid is definitely on trend and fashionable right now!
Quick, easy, and trendy!
It doesn’t get any better than that!

Confused about the sewing step????? Are we just seeing the 2 strips together to make it long enough???

Yes, that is correct. I have edited the post to make it more clear.

Did I miss the part about turning it inside out so right sides are showing and putting a final stitch in?

This scarf is just 1 layer of fabric thick since the flannel is the same front and back.

I'm a shameless fabric collector too, and I've bought it before for no particular purpose - just that I fell in love with the colors and patterns and knew I'd find something to do with it one day. I adore this project! It looks so warm and cozy. And, I love how quick and easy it is to make. I think the vintage buttons are a perfect accent. Now I really want to head to the fabric store...
