Personalized mason jar cozies in your team’s colors make a great Christmas gift idea!
Football season is just around the corner. I grew up rooting for the University of Tennessee and, as we say around here, my blood runs orange! When I stumbled across this orange and white chevron material in the Joann’s fabric remnants recently I just knew I could use it for a fun fall football craft.
These mason jar cozies are perfect for tailgating and can be made in your team’s colors. The addition of initials to the cozies makes your drink even easier to recognize and also make these a fun Christmas gift. And the best part? You can make one in about 15-20 minutes!
Supplies:
fabric
3/8″ grosgrain ribbon
fusible webbing
heat transfer vinyl (affiliate link)
This could be a great scrap stash buster because you don’t need much fabric at all.
Cut the fabric into two 9 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ strips.
Cut the fusible webbing into a 9″ x 3″ strip.
Iron the fusible webbing to the back side of one of the fabric strips.
Cut ribbon into four 10″ strips.
Lay the fabric face up. Place 2 strips of ribbon on top of fabric with ~3/4″ hanging off the edge and ~3/4″ from the sides. Top with the 2nd strip of fabric, this one with the right side facing down. Pin the ribbon in place. Repeat for the other end of the fabric.
To sew, pull ends of ribbon out one of the long sides of the fabric so it stays out of the way. Start with one of the short sides of the fabric, where the ribbon ends are, and sew a 1/4″ seam around the edge of the fabric. Once you reach the side where the ribbon is sticking out, tuck it into the fabric (see bottom left photo) and continue sewing 1/4″ seam. STOP sewing ~2″ before reaching your starting point (see arrow) so that you have a hole to pull the fabric through.
Pull fabric right-side-out through the hole. Tuck the fabric from the hole so that the ends are flush with the rest of the fabric and iron flat.
Sew another 1/4″ seam along the edges of the right-side-out fabric. This will help the cozy keep it’s shape and seal the hole.
I used my Silhouette to cut initials on gold glitter heat transfer vinyl (affiliate link). Remember, when cutting on heat transfer vinyl to flip the image horizontally!
The font I used is called Charming Normal. For initials like this the first and middle names go on the outside with the last name initial going in the center.
Iron the image on to the center of the cozy.
Tie the cozy onto a Mason jar and trim the ends of the ribbon if necessary. Seal the ends of the ribbon with a flame so they don’t unravel.
Wouldn’t these be a big hit at a tailgate? You fill them with your favorite beverage at home and put a lid on them until you’re ready to celebrate game day!
And since they only take ~15-20 minutes to make you can knock out a whole bunch for your friends and family for Christmas.
